Important Information About Voting in Person
When voting at a polling place , bring your Vote by Mail ballot, preferably in the sealed envelope.
The poll worker will write the word, “surrender,” across the ballot (this mark ensures it will not be able to pass through the machine).
You will then be given a ballot to vote. To be efficient in making your selections bring your filled in sample ballot with you or print/view the Voter Guide. The 2022 ballot is extensive; remember that the “down ballot” races have the highest LOCAL impact!
Below are tips for making sure your ballot does not get adjudicated (set aside for review):
— Mark your sample ballot first/have the Voter Guide with you. Once you are satisfied with all your votes then clearly mark the official ballot (messy ballots get adjudicated)
— It is OK to leave a contest blank (though the Voter Guide contains recommendations for all races). BUT - writing in an unqualified write-in candidate like “Elmer Fudd” will cause your ballot to be adjudicated
— Voting for too many candidates is called an “over vote.” For example, if you were supposed to vote for two candidates for a particular contest and you vote for three, your ballot will need to be adjudicated at which time no candidate receives a vote because of the over vote
— All crossed out votes, extraneous dots (where you may have set your pen on the ballot), sloppily filled in circles all require adjudication
— A write-in candidate circle checked and left blank gets adjudicated - you must write in the name; there is one write-In candidate to consider on the Voter Guide
— “Under votes” (contests left blank) are NOT adjudicated - leave a contest blank if there is no candidate for whom you wish to vote. For example, do not write “Keanu Reeves” as a write-in
